Homegrown - Sue Spargo quilt

At a Needle Girls retreat....it must have been November 2021, a project was discussed, and most of us decided to go ahead with it.   We did a bit of shopping and bought some sky and grass fabrics to share . . .
The project was Homegrown - a quilt designed by Sue Spargo.

We started completing blocks in January 2022, We had various deadlines where we took blocks for Show & Tell at Sunday Stitchers....and after a few distractions, decided January 2024 was the deadline for completion.

This is the one as per the pattern

- but as I say "Patterns are just a guide."

So, mine looks like this:

Mostly mine is fabric, not felt and I added various pieces of trims, buttons etc and themed most of the houses.
A few years back I attended a Wendy Williams class and had made a lot of flowers, some leaves, and a couple of birds in felt...the plan being a tree pattern of hers.
Whilst the styles of both Wendy Williams and Sue Spargo are different - there is some commonality, so I grabbed some of the flowers from the UFO project and added them to my middle block.  (Maybe I can delete the Wendy Williams tree from my UFO list now...LOL)

It was fun to make (mostly), tricky joining it as there were several variances in thickness of the fabric or felt, and sometimes, buttons I had added had to be removed to be able to sew the seams...

None of us really wanted the outside border and mostly we did something different in the middle.

Here is De's

Here is Sandi's - she chose to make hers to fit on her wall above a wardrobe space.

Here is Helen's - her middle block is a lovely jacaranda tree.

All from the same pattern - and some common fabrics - but all so different.

We enjoyed doing a group project....we now have another one on he go . . .

FNWF - January

A new year - but feeling comfortable getting back into the swing of Friday Night With Friends.

I had been with one of my sewing groups during the day, so had a full day of sewing.
Daytime I worked on an old cross stitch project...this is my SS #9 Challenge project - I have a set of 3 cross stitches of vases of flowers.   Two are done.....really want to finish this one.   The Challenge for the month is to make progress on it - so I decided that I would set aside 2 days to work on it.

Here is the starting point

and where I got to

At night time I did a bit of crochet....

And then I started quilting the skies of the houses in my Homegrown Quilt.  This project has a "Finish" date of 21st January....so it is a major focus at the moment.   More work on it over the weekend.

I wasn't sure if I would continue doing blog posts for FNWF (& FNSI), but it seems a lot of people are still doing it, so I will carry on for another year.   I do find it is a great record of my projects.

Thanks Cheryll for continuing on - thanks everyone for your company.

Homegrown Quilt - January-June

As noted back here - a group of friends are working on Sue Spargo's Homegrown Quilt.

It seems I haven't posted many pictures of my blocks, so this is a 6 month round-up.

We planned on one block a month, as we all have lots of other projects on the go.

I've left rimming them until I start joining them together
as some of the hand stitching goes well over the seam line
and I don't want to cut it off.

FNSI - June

I'm a bit late posting - but as most saw on Facebook - I was there in cyberspace working away

The usual Friday night crocheting for a bit

I'm still working on the Indigenous colors - almost enough for one rug.

Then onto my June house for the Sue Spargo Homegrown quilt.

it's good that I am doing this with friends - it makes me get a block done . . .else it would join the collection of UFOs.  This one needed to be ready for Show & Tell on Sunday - gotta love deadlines!

Happy Sewing all - hope you were productive - or at least enjoyed yourselves!

Thanks Wendy!

Homegrown - Sue Spargo

A few of us have decided to make Homegrown by Sue Spargo.

At the moment we are aiming at one block a month - and we are not including the outer border.

Mostly we are using fabrics and not felt and just generally doing our own thing, although we have started out with a small collection of shared fabrics.

This is my January block #1

It will be small when done - about 30" square without the border.
